Why is Biotin Important?

Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 and Vitamin H, is part of the B complex of vitamins. Like all B vitamins, Biotin is essential for helping your body convert carbohydrates into energy. It also helps your body metabolise proteins (amino acids), which are the building blocks of hair. Biotin therefore supports healthy hair growth, as well as encouraging a healthy liver, skin, eyes, and nails. Research has shown that it can help reduce hair fall in certain individuals.

Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning your body cannot store it, and so it should therefore be consumed every day. It is found (in small amounts) in a range of foods, including egg yolks, liver and yeast.

Biotin Deficiency

True Biotin deficiency is thought to be rare, but a lack of Biotin can cause hair loss and, in extreme cases, loss of hair colour. It is preferable to attain Biotin through your diet, rather than supplements — and fortunately it is found in small amounts in many types of food. However, when hair loss and/or hair thinning is an issue, a combination of supplements, as well as a healthy diet, is the best course of action for encouraging regrowth.
